During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have been facing fear, uncertainty, and measures such as social distancing and stay-at-home orders. People have been experiencing isolation and emotional distress, and some people are coping by hitting the bottle.
Alcohol beverage sales rose 55% from March 14, 2020 to March 21, 2020, reported the Nielsen market research firm. It added that liquor sales were 75% higher than the same period in 2019. Purchases of wine and beer also increased during that period. Why is alcohol dangerous? Clearly, U.S. residents have been buying more alcohol during the pandemic. If they’re consuming all of this alcohol, it could produce a number of negative effects. To handle their stress over the virus, stay-at-home measures, and other developments, people might start to use alcohol as a coping mechanism. They might drink so often and so much that they become tolerant to alcohol’s effects. They might use more and more of the substance and have to seek help at a rehab for alcoholism or require other assistance. Alcohol isn’t the best coping mechanism because it’s a depressant. If people are depressed and drink alcohol, they could become even more depressed. They may turn to drinking as a way to cope with this depression, but in doing so, they may further fuel their depression. As this cycle continues, it becomes increasingly dangerous to a person’s physical and mental health. What are some healthy ways to improve our mental health?
